Anita Prag

Anita obtained her Masters in Clinical Psychology and Community Counselling at Stellenbosch University. As part of her training she worked at 2 Military Hospital in Wynberg and completed community service at Air Force Base Langebaanweg, 4 Special Forces Langebaan and Saldhana Naval Base.

Before moving to private practice Anita spent 5 years at 2 Military Hospital as a Senior Psychologist in the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS). This afforded her the opportunity to work with the range of psycho/social, neurodevelopmental and psychiatric problems. She has worked closely with a Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician, Psychiatrists and other medical specialists, Social Workers and Occupational Therapists in service of patient care. As 2 Mil is a teaching hospital Anita has supervised the training of interns in their clinical work and their development as clinical psychologists.

She has deployed to Burundi and the DRC as the contingent psychologist. This is a unique experience that has expanded her understanding of the stressors that impact the human condition. In addition to offering individual sessions to soldiers requiring support during what can be a trying time, she conducted stress and conflict management workshops as well as resilience building workshops.

She takes a collaborative approach when working with children and adolescents. A thorough intake is essential where the child's development and history of presenting complaint are explored and a treatment plan is devised.

A similar approach applies with adults depending on the nature of the problem. While it is not necessary to fixate on all the details of the client's history, Anita aims to develop a good understanding of the individual's life story, as getting to know you is essential in order for therapy to catalyse meaningful insights. Unfortunately, these insights do not magically change one's situation, so learning how to apply them can also be a goal of therapy. Each client is unique in their presentation. As such, she tailors her approach using insight oriented psychodynamic therapy and cognitive behavioural techniques after a thorough assessment.
